Arlington Here We Come

In the early part of the 1906-07 season, the undefeated Hope Street High School took a trip which no other R.I. Interscholastic League team had previously taken. Hope went to Boston to wrest the championship of New England from Arlington High School. Hope had first met a Massachusetts team in 1905 meeting Brookline High School at Roger Williams Park losing 3-1. In one of the hardest-fought Interscholastic games ever played in the Hub on Spy Pond in Arlington, Hope succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Greater Boston and Interpreparatory League champions.

A large gathering watched the game as Hope was greatly handicapped by the lack of practice on account of all the snow in Providence the previous two weeks. Every man on Hope was out weighed and with these odds they put on a magnificent battle, which, although fast and rough, was devoid of any dirty playing and tripping (Providence Journal). The Rhode Islanders made many and desparate efforts to score but the Arlington defense proved to be invincible. Bosworth, Nisbet and Bullock did particularly good work for Hope St. School (Boston Globe). The victory gave Arlington claim to the New England Interscholastic championship. Hope would eventually hold off Technical for the R.I. Interscholastic title at season's end.
