Ice hockey was growing once the Rhode Island Auditorium opened in 1926. Providence Reds and Auditorium General Manager Louis Pieri was passionate about growing the game in the state. The Auditorium provided schoolboy players a chance to play in the Providence Junior Hockey League in 1927-28. Many future college and Senior Amateur stars cut their teeth in the Junior leagues including Nat Hardy, Junior Young and former Hope and US National team stars George "Pud" Quirk for the Rhode Island Red Juniors and LaSalle and US National team star Clem Harnedy in goal for the Summits and Senators.
