In the 1931 Cranston High School All-Stater Fred Cuddy, after prepping at Hebron Academy, laced them up for the University of Maryland Dental School. He would not be the only Rhode Islander to head South to play in the Old-Line State. His brother John Cuddy (Cranston) and "Cute" Woodbury (Cranston) would follow the next season along with proven star Howie Crins (Technical). They would go on to win the 1932-33 Baltimore Hockey League title. Crins' exit the following season proved costly but the acquisition of Pud Quirk (Hope) and Ken Phillips (Cranston) improved the team considerably. Fred Cuddy, Quirk and Phillips teamed together to form one of the flashiest and most powerful scoring line combinations in the loop. The team did not defend their championship but Quirk, with his speed and elusiveness, earned the annual "Best Player" award for the 1933-34 season. Fred Cuddy (Freestate AA) and Pud Quirk (Baltimore Orioles) continued their hockey careers while in Maryland in 1934-35. Crins was a barnstorming iceman and returned to Maryland to play at times.
