The Under Card
In the 1947-48 season the R.I. Scarlets played their Atlantic Amateur Hockey League games and other opponents at the R.I. Auditorium as the main attraction in a twin bill of games. The common under card usually featured the Providence Clippers, the U.S. Naval Reserve Whitecaps or the Mount St. Charles Grads. The Providence Clippers, a mix of Brown University varsity and freshman players, had played in the 1946-47 R.I. Senior Hockey League.
Former Providence Reds goalie Mike Karakas had recently sworn into the Naval Reserves in Providence and re-entered the local hockey picture as an assistant coach with the Whitecaps (made up of naval reservists). The Mount St. Charles sextet were an all-star team of former schoolboy Mounties (including coaching legend Bill Belisle). All three squads squared off against each other as well competing against other New England amateur sixes.
